The mission of the Alaska Women's Hall of Fame is to celebrate the women who have shaped Alaska. We will honor, in perpetuity, those Alaskan women whose contributions have influenced the direction of Alaska in any and all fields, including, but not limited to the arts, athletics, business, education, government, health, the humanities, native affairs, philanthropy, community service, conservation, adventure, theology and science.
Nominees may be living or deceased, but must be or have been residents of Alaska and made long term, significant contributions to Alaska through their professional work, civic involvement and generated outcomes that prepared pathways for future generations of women. Their contributions should be of state-wide or community, or national importance and of enduring value. We strive to be regionally and ethnically balanced among the many women from diverse backgrounds who have form Alaska.

This effort was initiated in 2008 as Alaska prepared to observe our 50th Anniversary of statehood. In the process of exploring women of diverse communities and various time periods in Alaskas history, it is clear that there were extraordinary women in Alaska long before the statehood effort was initiated. Thus this program is broader than a celebration of the leading heroines of the last 50 years, but also encompasses those who contributed long before 1959.

It is our goal to expand the number of women to be honored annually and to work with educational institutions and the press to disseminate the stories of the women who broke trail for those of us who came later. We want the history of Alaska to include the many women who made significant contributions to our development and who lead the way for Alaskans to not merely survive, but to thrive.
